666

The Bridge of the Beast? The railroad bridge just at the beginning of the town of Gouda is number 666 on the Netherlands list of bridges. During October it only opens twice a day, first at 6 AM and second at 9:15 PM. We arrived at 10 AM and stayed tied to this small dock until it opened at night. Then we passed under it and tied up on the other side until morning. In 24 hours we covered less than 1/2 mile.

Quay

Our last stop before returning to Bruinisse was the small, beautiful, fortress town of Willemstad. Here Tenaya is tied up to the quay in the city center. During the summer this area is filled with boats, but late October we shared it with very few.

Bunkers

The fortifications around Willemstad are from many different wars.

The most recent were part of the German defenses built during World War II.

The next day we went through one of the commercial locks at Krammersluisen. Our mast was a little too high for the yacht lock, and the bridge opens in the lock we were directed to use. The larger locks are designed to take a number of huge ships and barges but this time we were the only boat in it. We felt very small. This was the end our our tour of the northern part of the Netherlands and near the end of our season. It was a great summer and we learned a lot about sailing and about our love of travel and visiting new towns.
