Our first stop after Amsterdam was the Gouwzee, a small shallow bay that was created when the island of Marken was connected to the mainland. Volendam and Marken were prosperous fishing towns in the 17th century. After the Zuiderzee was drained and the inland waters cut off from the North Sea the fishing industry was destroyed. Today these towns survive from tourism. We choose Volendam as our first stop since it was within walking distance to Edam. Having eaten so much Edam cheese in our lives we wanted to visit the town. Tenaya's draft is 2 meters and the channel leading into the harbor is 2.2 meters but we had no problem as it was well bouyed. Once inside we tied up on the quiet side of the town harbor.
