waddenzee

Along the north coast of the Netherlands are a string of islands that have the North Sea on the outside and the Waddenzee on the inside. Some of the best cruising in the Netherlands is in and around the Waddenzee...but not for boats like Tenaya that require more than 2 meters of depth. In the picture above you see the view we saw after passing through the locks at Den Oever. It looks like miles of open water, but most of the Waddenzee is dry land at low tide and not that much deeper at high tide. We needed to follow a fairly narrow channel to the Island of Texel. There is a sailor belief that you should not set sail on a Friday. On Friday the 13th we sailed with the ebb of the tide and just went buoy to buoy. We could tell it was not deep when we would see birds standing on the water not that far from us. Of course, since this route was northwest the wind was coming from the northwest. So we motored in the narrow channel rather than tacking back and forth. Once we changed to a more westerly course we put up the sails and enjoyed the light wind.

marina

We arrived in Oudeschild, a fishing village on the south side of Texel island. During the season it is hard to find places in many marinas, but in the middle of October we had our choice of locations.

fishing boats

Oudeschild still has a good size fishing fleet, but in the 17th and 18th centuries it was an important stopping place for ships waiting for the right weather to head into the North Sea. 3000 ships a year would stop here in those days.

There were a couple of things we wanted to do, but ran out of time. One was the opportunity to go out with a shrimp boat and you even get to eat some of the catch.

After a couple of nights on Texel we headed off in a different direction. The Isselmeer is divided from the Waddenzeee by a 20 mile long dike, with a lock at each end. We came through the western end and now we will return to the eastern end. When we sailed to Texel the wind was coming from the Northwest..the exact direct we need to go. Now that we were headed in a Southeast direct of course the wind was coming from the southeast. Oh well, it was peaceful nonetheless and we arrived at Makkum before nightfall.

Swan

Another of Katie's friends, a black swan who was a bit of a ham, posing nicely for many pictures.
