Enkhuizen was a Dutch East India Company port. In the 16th century it was as important as Amsterdam, with a population of 40,000.

We stayed at a new marina just outside the town center. Looking back, that was a mistake. We should always try to stay tied along the wall in the town centers, the same places where ships have docked for centuries.

Part of the fun in each new town is shopping for food. After almost 20 years of rarely cooking at home, now we make almost all our meals on board and it's become something that we anticipate and enjoy. Each town has different choices and quality of items, so we decide what our meals will be when we are in the market. Jim likes cooking whatever it is in the wok and serving it with steamed rice.

Bread anywhere is pretty darn good. Unlike America it's always bought fresh and without preservatives. We haven't had to learn how to bake that on board yet. Someday we'll have to....

Our original plan was to stop in Medemblik and other towns in the Isselmeer but we decided that we should try to get to the Waddenzee and visit one of the islands in the north of the country so we set sail in poor visibility for Den Oever, about 20 miles away.
